When we think of saving water, the backyard pool may seem like the biggest water guzzler, but, believe it or not, recent studies in the USA have shown that a pool actually uses less water than lawn!

Although research has shown that a pool and surrounding paved or decked area can use significantly less water than a traditional lawn of a similar size, there are things you can do as a pool owner to save even more.

Top tips for pool owners to save water

1. Install a Pool Blanket & Roller

A correctly fitted pool blanket can save up to 97% of water evaporation. A blanket will decrease the amount of water and chemicals you need to maintain your pool. Your pool will stay cleaner as it reduces the amount of debris and leaves falling into the pool.

2. Install a Water Tank

Melbourne homes have the capacity to harvest tens of thousands of litres of rainwater every year. Use your tank water to top up your pool and the excess can be used on your garden and even back in your home for the toilets and laundry.

3. Install a down pipe diverter

No room for a tank? Installing a simple down pipe diverter can be the answer. The diverter can be installed on any downpipe with a good roof catchment area and divert your rainwater directly into your pool.

4. Maintain correct chemical balance.

Keeping your pool water balanced all year round will make your pool safer, cleaner and less likely to ever require draining and refilling to correct the water balance issues.

5. Install a backwash minimisation system to prevent unnecessary water loss.

A cartridge filter is a great option and requires no backwashing at all.

6. Do not over fill your pool.

Ensuring your pool is not overfilled will reduce the amount of water lost due to splashing. Also installing suitable overhanging pavers will keep splash-out to a minimum.

7. Prevent wind.

Wind contributes to evaporation. Plan your pool landscaping to minimize wind with hedges, trees, shade sales or walls providing a barrier.
